Introduction

Greetings fellow Terrans.

This web site is a fan generated cross-reference for Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy. The goal of this site is to collect, organize and cross-reference all the little pieces of information in the Trilogy so that readers who wish to find out all the details about a specific character, place, event or philosophy can do so without wracking their brains reading all 1700 pages (again). We're doing that for you (and is it ever a huge task).

We are expanding our library of Mars technical information, and hope to provide as many maps, NASA/Russian generated images and other assorted cross-references as possible, in order to enhance the content of the original novels. While Stan is a fantastic geological writer, some of the locations he describes in his trilogy need to be seen as well as envisioned. We hope to fill in that gap with the little pictures that aren't in the novels.

Sections

The other sections of this web site are described as follows:

  • The First Hundred
The core characters in the Trilogy, these are the first humans to colonize Mars and they give it much of the own philosophy (from Anne Clayborne's Red, through Hiroko AI's aerophany, to Sax Russell's Green) politics and economy. Each major character has a long-term role in the trilogy, and this is expanded upon in their entries. An astute reader will quickly realize that there are not one hundred entries in this section -- Stan simply didn't have the need to flesh out each and everyone of them!
  • The Timeline
The Trilogy takes place from around 2026 until 2206. This section attempts to place all the scenes in the novels on a timeline, showing the flow of the story and the critical junctures. Many dates are synthesized from clues in the story, and not explicitly stated in the novels.
  • Technology
There are a lot of technological changes noted in the trilogy. This section describes them in detail, and has pointers to real world commentary, notes and examples.
  • Aerophany
One of the hardest notions in the Trilogy, this is essentially the new world-view/religion of Mars, first defined by Hiroko. This section is more commentary than notes.
  • Glossary
All the new terms created by Stan, and some that are just obscure, are noted and defined here.
  • Index
A bookmark cross-reference to terms. An index. You know. An index!

A Quickie Disclaimer

This web site is a work of love, not profit. We have no financial connection with Mr. Robinson nor his publishers, and do not seek that. We're simply trying to expand the detail of his work, link it to real science (upon which much of the technical content is based upon anyway) and further enhance the enjoyment of readers all over the Internet.
